But he fooled himself and became the first North Dakotan to gain a spot in the fastest field ever assembled in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association tournament. He wasn't entertaining even a thought about pitching a high enough score in the 200-shoe qualifying to earn a berth in the 36-man championship class. Becoming sold on the game from the start, Jerry worked last summer at a pizza shop to help earn money to make the trip to the World Tournament at Greenville, Ohio. ![]() The 17-year-old righthander developed an interest in the game three years ago just after his hometown hosted the World Tournament for the first time in Living only a few long pitches from the 18-court complex located at Oak Grove Park near the Red River, Black spends countless hours practicing.
